Horace wrote this ode around 23 BCE, to a woman trying to read her future in astrological charts. Don't, he tells her — the gods' plans were never ours to know. Strain the wine. Cut back long hope. Even as we speak, the envious hour is fleeing. And then the two words the rest of Western literature decided to keep.
Worth knowing: carpe is a gardener's word. It means pluck — as you pluck ripe fruit. Not so much "seize the day" as "harvest it, while it's ripe."
