Catullus wrote it around 55 BCE about the woman he called Lesbia, and in two lines he said everything anyone has managed to say since about loving someone who is bad for you: I don't know why I do it. I only feel it happening, and it tears me apart. A detail most people miss: the final word is excrucior literally "I am crucified." It's where our word excruciating comes from.
