Zapovit (Testament) — Shevchenko | Ukrainian Poetry Hoodie

«Як умру, то поховайте мене на могилі, серед степу широкого, на Вкраїні милій…»

"When I die, make my grave high upon a mound, out amid the open steppe of my dear Ukraine." Taras Shevchenko wrote Zapovit in Pereiaslav on 25 December 1845, gravely ill with what was probably typhus. He recovered, and lived another fifteen years. The poem has since been translated into more than 150 languages and sung as a second national anthem — to a melody not by Mykola Lysenko, who set it first in 1868, but by Hordii Hladkyi, whose version the country simply preferred.

The design turns the flag into the landscape Shevchenko asked to be buried in: golden steppe below, open sky above, the burial mound on the horizon, the tryzub rising over it like a sun. Original Ukrainian text with an English translation made for Palimpsest.
